Repair, not replace

Dental fillings in four steps

Comfortable, tooth-coloured repairs that seal out bacteria and restore natural shape and shine.

1

Assess & plan

We confirm the decay, cracks or gaps, take photos/X-rays if needed, and choose the right material.

2

Numb & isolate

Local anaesthetic keeps things painless. A rubber dam keeps the tooth dry for a stronger bond.

3

Clean & bond

Decay is removed precisely. We etch, prime and layer composite, setting each layer with light.

4

Shape, bite & polish

We refine the bite so it feels natural, then polish to a smooth, stain-resistant finish.

Answers at a glance

Dental fillings FAQs

Will a filling hurt?
We use local anaesthetic to keep treatment comfortable. You’ll feel vibration or pressure but not pain. If you’re anxious, tell us—we’ll pace it and top up anaesthetic as needed.
How long does a filling take?
Small fillings are often 30–40 minutes. Larger, multi-surface or cracked-tooth repairs can take longer, especially if we place the material in layers for strength.
What material do you use?
We place modern tooth-coloured composite resin. It bonds to enamel and dentine, allowing conservative repairs with a natural shade match.
Will my tooth be sensitive afterwards?
Mild cold sensitivity is common for a few days. It usually settles. If biting feels high or sensitivity worsens after a week, contact us for a quick adjustment.
How long do composite fillings last?
With good brushing, flossing and routine hygiene visits, composites often last many years. Longevity depends on size, bite forces and diet— we’ll advise your specific outlook.
Can you replace old silver (amalgam) fillings?
Yes. We can replace failing amalgam with composite if clinically appropriate. If a tooth has large cracks or thin cusps, we may recommend an onlay or crown instead.
When is a crown better than a filling?
If a cavity is very large, the tooth is cracked, or cusp support is weak, a crown/onlay can protect the tooth from splitting. We’ll explain options and pros/cons.
Can I eat and drink straight away?
Composite sets immediately under blue light, so there’s no waiting for it to harden. Avoid chewing while you’re numb and be cautious until full feeling returns.
