Anatomy

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant replaces a missing root with a small titanium post. An abutment connects the post to a custom crown, creating a tooth that looks and functions like the real thing.

She then supported me with follow up requirements with getting replacement retainers. The practise is lovely inside too, highly recommended and won’t hesitate to return in the future. I’ve visited the Smile Showroom quite a few times now as I was having a smile makeover with whitening, a smile trial and composite veneers, and every visit was fantastic. Holly is AMAZING at what she does, my teeth are gorgeous and exactly what I wanted but still look like natural teeth! And she’s very gentle when carrying out treatments which made all the difference. Quick checks My gums are healthy and I keep up with hygiene visits. Healthy foundations help implants last. I don’t smoke (or I’m happy to reduce/stop during healing). Supports better healing and long-term success. I can attend a 3D scan and follow a cleaning plan. We’ll guide you through each step. The tooth has been missing for a while. Sometimes needs extra planning, we’ll map the best route after your scan. I grind my teeth (bruxism). We may suggest a nightguard and stronger materials. I’m a light/moderate smoker. We’ll plan extra support and healing time. I have active gum infection or untreated decay. We’ll stabilise things first to keep implants safe. I have a complex medical history (e.g. recent jaw radiotherapy, uncontrolled diabetes, certain medications). We’ll coordinate with your GP/consultant and plan carefully.

Teeth grinding: ask us about a night guard if you clench.

Do implants hurt?

Treatment is carried out with local anaesthetic, so you should be comfortable. Afterwards, mild soreness for a few days is typical and managed with routine pain relief.

How long does it take from start to finish?

A straightforward single tooth is often 3–6 months from placement to final crown. If grafting is needed, allow extra time. Your 3D scan lets us map a precise timeline.

Am I a suitable candidate?

Most healthy adults are suitable. We check gum health, bone volume and medical history. Smokers or grinders may still be candidates with a tailored plan.

What if I don’t have enough bone?

Options include bone grafting, sinus lift or alternative implant designs with guided surgery. We’ll recommend the safest route after your scan.

How long do implants last?

With good hygiene and regular reviews, implants can last many years. The crown may need maintenance over time—similar to a natural tooth’s crown.

How much do implants cost?

Costs depend on the number of teeth and complexity. You’ll get a clear, itemised plan before starting, with staged payments available.
