Types of gum disease & related conditions

Inside Smile Showroom Ormskirk
Gingivitis (early inflammation)

Red, puffy gums that bleed when brushing. Usually reversible with improved cleaning and a professional polish.

  • Signs: Bleeding on brushing/flossing, bad breath.
  • Treatment: Hygiene visit, home-care coaching, review.
Periodontitis (gum & bone disease)

Deeper inflammation where plaque hardens below the gumline, creating pockets and gradual bone loss.

  • Signs: Bleeding, receding gums, drifting teeth, gaps.
  • Treatment: Full-mouth gum therapy (Mini/Regular/Super) with review at 6–12 weeks.
Rapid progression (aggressive forms)

Faster bone loss in some people, sometimes linked to family history or systemic factors.

  • Signs: Sudden mobility, deep pockets at a younger age.
  • Treatment: Intensive cleaning blocks, closer recalls, liaison with your dentist/GP if helpful.
Peri-implant mucositis

Inflamed gums around a dental implant without bone loss, often reversible if treated early.

  • Signs: Redness, bleeding when cleaning around the implant.
  • Treatment: Implant-safe debridement, tailored home-care tools, review.
Peri-implantitis (implant bone loss)

Inflammation with measurable bone loss around an implant. Needs prompt, focused care.

  • Signs: Bleeding/suppuration, deep pockets, radiographic changes.
  • Treatment: Non-surgical/surgical decontamination and maintenance plan; referral as required.
Gum recession & sensitivity

Gums pull back to expose root surfaces, can be linked to brushing style, bite, or past inflammation.

  • Signs: “Longer” teeth, sensitivity to cold/sweets, notching at the necks.
  • Treatment: Technique tweaks, desensitisers, bite checks; surgical options in select cases.

Answers at a glance

Gum treatment FAQs

Do bleeding gums mean I have gum disease?
Bleeding is a common sign of inflammation (gingivitis or periodontitis). It’s treatable—our cleaning plus home-care tweaks usually settle it quickly.
What is a deep clean (root surface debridement)?
A meticulous clean below the gumline to remove plaque and calculus from root surfaces. It helps gums reattach and inflammation subside.
Will gum treatment hurt?
We use effective local anaesthetic for deep cleaning. You may feel pressure or vibration. Mild tenderness after is normal and settles within a few days.
Can receded gums grow back?
Inflammation can shrink, but lost gum height doesn’t regenerate on its own. We focus on stabilising disease; surgical grafting may be an option in select cases.
How often will I need maintenance?
Most people benefit from 3–6 month periodontal maintenance. We’ll set a recall interval based on your risk and response to treatment.
Will gum treatment fix bad breath?
Often, yes. Reducing plaque below the gumline cuts odour-causing bacteria. We’ll also review tongue cleaning and dry mouth contributors.
Do I need antibiotics or surgery?
Not usually. First-line care is meticulous cleaning and home care. Antibiotics or surgery are reserved for specific cases that don’t respond as expected.
How long until I see results?
Bleeding and tenderness often improve within 2–4 weeks. We recheck pockets around 8–12 weeks to confirm healing and adjust your plan.

Calm care. Healthier gums.
